Gaza, Tens of thousands of Palestinians finally returned to northern Gaza for the first time since the massive attacks of Israel in October 2023. This incident occurred after a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, which began to be effective since Sunday (1/19/2025).

The return of these residents is an important symbol for Hamas, who claims it is a big victory against Israel. “This is a declaration of failure and defeat for Israeli occupation and their expulsion plan,” said Izzat al-Rishq, senior Hamas official, quoted from Anadolu Agency, Monday (1/27/2025).

According to Al-Rishq, this success shows that the Palestinian people remain firm in maintaining their rights and land despite facing prolonged aggression. He also called for an increase in the delivery of assistance and the recovery process throughout Gaza, which was severely affected by conflict.

Thousands of Palestinians began to go home

Thousands of Palestinians began to move back to the northern Gaza region through the Netzarim corridor and the coast of Jalan Al-Rashid. The Israeli military allowed residents to return on foot since 7 am local time.

This step is part of an effort to carry out a ceasefire agreement that has been designed to reduce tension. This ceasefire also includes the release of three Israeli prisoners, including a woman named Arbel Yehud, as a result of mediation by Qatar.

The impact of a prolonged conflict

Since the start of military attacks in October 2024, Gaza suffered severe damage. The attack killed more than 47,000 Palestinians and destroyed thousands of houses and important infrastructure.

Hamas called the return of residents to the northern region of Gaza as a sign that the mass expulsion plan by Israel was unsuccessful. “Our people remain firm, and this is proof that the occupation failed to achieve their aggressive goals,” said Al-Rishq.

Recovery efforts in the midst of limitations

Although the ceasefire brought new hopes, the situation in Gaza remained apprehensive. Humanitarian assistance and reconstruction process become an urgent need. Hamas urged the international community to accelerate the delivery of aid to the area affected by the war.
