EconomyApple Ready to Build Research Center worth US $ 160 million in Indonesia

The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has just issued a certificate of domestic component (TKDN) for 11 cellular telephone products and 9 Apple tablet computer products, technology giants from the United States. This step marks Apple’s commitment to comply with Indonesian regulations while opening up massive investment opportunities in the country.

The Ministry of Industry’s spokesman, Febri Hendri Antoni Arief, explained that the TKDN certificate was issued after Apple meets the requirements stipulated in the Minister of Industry Regulation No. 29 of 2017 concerning TKDN for Mobile, Computer and Tablet (HKT) products. Previously, Apple was sentenced to sanctions due to default in fulfilling TKDN obligations in the 2020-2023 period.

“Apple has chosen scheme 3 in proposal 2025-2028, which includes their commitment to build research and innovation facilities in Indonesia worth US $ 160 million. This will be the second Apple research and innovation center outside the United States and the first in Asia, “said Febri in an official statement, Friday (7/3/2025).

iPhone 16 series and other products officially meet TKDN
With the issuance of 20 TKDN certificates, Apple can now take care of postal and telecommunications certificates (posts) from the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo). This postal certificate is a condition for Apple to obtain Import Product Registration (TPPI) from the Ministry of Industry, which is needed to obtain IMEI and Import Approval (PI) from the Ministry of Trade.

One Apple product that has met TKDN is the latest iPhone 16 series, ranging from the Premium Iphone 16 Pro Max variant to a more affordable model, the iPhone 16E. These products have been registered at the official TKDN Kemenperin website since March 7, 2025, signifying its readiness to be officially marketed in Indonesia.

There are five iPhone 16 models that have a TKDN value of 40 percent, namely:

  1. iPhone 16 (kode A3287)
  2. iPhone 16 Plus (A3290)
  3. iPhone 16 Pro (A3293)
  4. iPhone 16 Pro Max (A3296)
  5. iPhone 16e (A3409)

Positive impact on the Indonesian technology industry
The issuance of this TKDN certificate does not only open the way for Apple to market its newest products in Indonesia, but also becomes a positive signal for the domestic technology industry. The construction of a research and innovation center of US $ 160 million is expected to encourage technology transfer, create jobs, and increase Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global arena.

Febri emphasized that Apple’s move was in line with the government’s efforts to attract foreign investment that contributed to the development of the domestic industry. “This is a clear proof that TKDN regulations not only benefit the local industry, but also attract global investors,” he said.
