In a significant move to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine, the Indonesian government, in collaboration with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and the National Amil Zakat Agency (BAZNAS), has launched a massive fundraising campaign. The initiative aims to raise $200 million (approximately Rp3.27 trillion) to support emergency relief efforts and the reconstruction of Gaza. This campaign underscores Indonesia’s commitment to global solidarity and its role as a leading Muslim-majority nation.
The campaign, which was officially launched in Jakarta, has no strict deadline but will prioritize fundraising during the holy month of Ramadan. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anis Matta, expressed confidence in achieving the target, citing the strong track record of Indonesian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in mobilizing resources for humanitarian causes. “We are optimistic that the $200 million target can be met as an initial step to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people,” Matta stated during the launch event.
Dual Focus: Emergency Aid and Long-Term Reconstruction
The funds raised will be allocated to two primary objectives: providing immediate emergency humanitarian assistance and supporting the long-term reconstruction of Gaza. “While emergency aid is crucial at this moment, we also aim to contribute to the rebuilding of Gaza, ensuring a sustainable future for its residents,” Matta added. This dual approach reflects Indonesia’s holistic vision in addressing both the urgent and long-term needs of the Palestinian people.
A Collaborative Effort for Global Impact
The campaign is the result of three months of intensive dialogue among dozens of zakat and humanitarian institutions. It represents a coordinated effort to create a strategic, impactful, and symbolic movement. According to Anis Matta, the initiative is not just about financial assistance but also about demonstrating Indonesia’s active role in the Islamic world. “This program is strategic, impactful, and symbolic. It is a tangible expression of our solidarity with the global Muslim community,” he explained.
Sudarno Abdul Hakim, Chair of MUI for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation, emphasized the importance of international collaboration in addressing the crisis. “The humanitarian crisis in Palestine is not just Indonesia’s responsibility—it is a global responsibility. We must work together with the international community to make a meaningful impact,” he said.
A Call to Action for Global Solidarity
The campaign has already garnered widespread support from various sectors in Indonesia, including religious organizations, NGOs, and the general public. It serves as a reminder of the power of collective action in addressing global challenges. As the largest Muslim-majority country in the world, Indonesia’s initiative is expected to inspire other nations to step up their efforts in supporting Palestine.
